Success Stories
i) Increase in income by protecting crop from Domestic / Wild animals :
Open grazing has been usual practice in tribal villages of Adhaura block in Kaimur district. We observed during survey that standing crops are severely harmed by pets and wild animals. Though the farmers try to protect crops by fencing the field with shrubs and thrones but it has not been found adequate measure to prevent grazing. KVK introduced fencing of field with parachute rope net. Parachute rope net is moderate in weight, affordable and long lasting. It is too strong to break and shatter. Hence animals can not enter in field for grazing.
One of the adopted villages Karar has been selected to demonstrate the technology. After conducting demonstration, Kisan club at Karar village was provided Parachute rope net as community input for two acres of field. Members of Kisan club used the parachute net for fencing of fields on rotation basis. One used it for protecting vegetable crop, other for Paddy and yet other for groundnut and so on.
The result has been found amazing. Prevention from open grazing resulted into increase in production by 25 to 30%.
ii) Success through intensive cultivation of Guava
This is success story of Sri Anil Kumar of Baraura village under Ramgarh block- a small farmer whose only source of cash income was Guava orchard in three acres. He was harvesting the fruit around 55-60 qtls in a year and was able to earn only about 25-30 thousand.
On a diagnostic visit to village Baraura KVK scientist suggested him to exercise intensification of Guava plants and replace the old traditional varieties with high yielding widely acceptable varieties of Allahabadi Safeda and L-49. KVK helped with the technical support for rejuvenating the orchard. He was suggested to apply Organic Fertilizer for improvement of soil fertility before intensive re-plantation. Sri Anil was also imparted training on Package of Practices for maintenance of orchard.
Right from the first year of bearing the yield / plant increased considerably. In second year onwards the he harvested 250-260 qtls in 3 acres. Fruit was demanded by traders and he was able to sell the product at a negotiated price of Rs. 2000 / qtl. and fetched net return of Rs. 1.75 lakhs in a year. This increase in income improved his standard of living.
