Implementation of Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act
Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act enacted in 2001 aims to conserve traditional and ancestral plant varieties which farmers are cultivating and maintaining through generations. Every traditional variety has some unique qualities and hence needs conservation. Farmers’ rights must be preserved for the variety they have been maintaining.
KVK identified 67 varieties of different crops (Pigeon pea, Rice, Linseed, Vegetables and Spices) through extensive survey. Application for registration with PPV & FRA in the name of farmers was made. 41 varieties have been registered. The balance 26 varieties are under process for registration. Identification process is still on the way. As soon as any new ancestral variety is identified it will be get registered with the authority.
Bio-pesticide
KVK has developed Bio-pesticide from garlic to control sucking pest like Aphids, Jassids, Thrips etc in vegetable crops. Garlic (grinded) is mixed with jaggery in 1:1 ratio and leave it for 3-5 days for fermentation. After 5 days remove the extract and preserve it for further application. Farmers are advised to use it as per recommended dose of 3 ml/liter of water to control the pest. This technology has been used in Bharehara village of Adhaura block in the year 2015. Farmers are eager to adopt this technology because of inputs are locally available and safe for human beings.
