VANVASI SEVA KENDRA (Host Institution of KVK)
Genesis
The underdeveloped Kaimur plateau area of Bihar attracted the attention of Late Jay Prakash Narayan and some of his associates in course of drought and famine relief work through Bihar Relief Committee during 1966-67. Inhuman coercive measures adopted by the Govt. officials and money lenders for recovery of loans from the famine hit tribal population of Adhaura towards the end of 1967 came to J.P.’s notice and he inspired his associates to establish Vanvasi Seva Kendra (V.S.K.) for sustained service and upliftment of local forest dwellers and tribals.
The Organisation
Vanvasi Seva Kendra came into existence in 1968 and was registered in 1969 as a voluntary organisation under Societies Registration Act, 1860. Now after about 40 years of involvement in developmental activities through various projects in fields particularly in Agriculture, Self Help Groups, Women empowerment, Health, Education, Sanitation, Irrigation etc. the organisation has made a good rapport among the tribal people. The organisation has its main administrative office in Adhaura along with subcentres in Tilouthu, Nauhatta, Sasaram and Bhabua. The total manpower strength of the organisation is more than 100 and is expected to grow to 150 in the coming year.
Main projects implemented :
Leprosy Eradication
- Survey and identification of leprosy patients in Adhaura, Bhagwanpur, Rampur & Chainpur blocks.
- Information, education and communication (IEC) activities for awareness generation on leprosy
- Economic rehabilitation of leprosy patients
- Activities for prevention of disability in leprosy patients

- Identification of People with Disability (PWD)
- To help the PWDs to get back in main stream of society
- To aware them about various Govt. schemes available for their help
- To form Disable People’s Organisation (DPO)
- To help PWDs to get Vocational Training
- To help organize Disability Camps and distribution of Disability certificates
- To organize Block Advocacy, PRI, Women with Disability and Stakeholders meeting
- To organize counseling programme for parents of disable children
- To form Disable People Federation (DPF)
Our Mission
- To strive for integrated economic, social and cultural development of the inhabitants of the region;
- To ensure proper utilization of local natural resources to build an agro-industrial society;
- To build ideal villages in which villagers are able to achieve all round development based on self reliance and in conformity with the national ethos;
- To inculcate amongst the villagers an attitude of mutual cooperation and understanding and to raise their economic, social, educational, cultural and moral standard; and
- To undertake various activities and programmes to achieve the above objects

The organisation mainly works in Bihar state of India.
Organisation Profile
Management: Vanvasi Seva Kendra is being managed by a group of social workers, educationists, and professionals. The core committee consists of seven life members, whereas the larger body (Executive Committee) consists of 21 members including 7 life members and 14 ordinary members nominated by the former for a term of 3 years.

Total strength is more than 100 which includes Agriculture scientists, Doctors (MBBS & BAMS), Engineers, Social workers (MSW) and experts related to specific fields
