Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kaimur is one of the frontline extension institutes under Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and managed by host institute Vanvasi Seva Kendra situated at Adhaura. The institute works to increase agricultural productivity and ensuring household food and nutrition security.
The KVK, Kaimur is managed and run by Vanvasi Seva Kendra, a renowned organization working in Bihar state since 1969 and founded by Loknayak Jay Prakash Narayan. The brief information about the host institution is given below:
The underdeveloped Kaimur plateau area of Bihar attracted the attention of Late Jay Prakash Narayan and some of his associates in course of drought and famine relief work through Bihar Relief Committee during 1966-67. Inhuman coercive measures adopted by the Govt. officials and money lenders for recovery of loans from the famine hit tribal population of Adhaura towards the end of 1967 came to J.P.’s notice and he inspired his associates to establish Vanvasi Seva Kendra (V.S.K.) for sustained service and upliftment of local forest dwellers and tribals.
Vanvasi Seva Kendra came into existence in 1968 and was registered in 1969 as a voluntary organisation under Societies Registration Act, 1860. Now after about 40 years of involvement in developmental activities through various projects in fields particularly in Agriculture, Self Help Groups, Women empowerment, Health, Education, Sanitation, Irrigation etc. the organisation has made a good rapport among the tribal people. The organisation has its main administrative office in Adhaura along with subcentres in Tilouthu, Nauhatta, Sasaram and Bhabua. The total manpower strength of the organisation is more than 100 and is expected to grow to 150 in the coming year.
The organisation mainly works in Bihar state of India.
Management: Vanvasi Seva Kendra is being managed by a group of social workers, educationists, and professionals. The core committee consists of seven life members, whereas the larger body (Executive Committee) consists of 21 members including 7 life members and 14 ordinary members nominated by the former for a term of 3 years.
Total strength is more than 100 which includes Agriculture scientists, Doctors (MBBS & BAMS), Engineers, Social workers (MSW) and experts related to specific fields

Increase in income by protecting crop from Domestic / Wild animals :
Open grazing has been usual practice in tribal villages of Adhaura block in Kaimur district. We observed during survey that standing crops are severely harmed by pets and wild animals. Though the farmers try to protect crops by fencing the field with shrubs and thrones but it has not been found adequate measure to prevent grazing. KVK introduced fencing of field with parachute rope net. Parachute rope net is moderate in weight, affordable and long lasting. It is too strong to break and shatter. Hence animals can not enter in field for grazing.
One of the adopted villages Karar has been selected to demonstrate the technology. After conducting demonstration, Kisan club at Karar village was provided Parachute rope net as community input for two acres of field. Members of Kisan club used the parachute net for fencing of fields on rotation basis. One used it for protecting vegetable crop, other for Paddy and yet other for groundnut and so on.
